Sylas (Fisher of Souls) is a playable Hero and member of the Bandit Clan. He is one of the four Bandit characters first introduced during the Armello Kickstarter campaign, and is available as a timed exclusive to those who pledged the requisite amount during that period. At the time of the tablet release, the Bandit Clan characters (and other Kickstarter goodies) will be opened to the public as DLC in the Spring of 2016.

Description[]

Sylas is a lanky brown otter wearing chain mail armor covered with dark purple cloth bearing a Jolly Roger, as well as a thick fur cloak. He carries a large fishing spear which he no doubt uses for his assorted acts of butchery, which, it's safe to say, doesn't always involve things that walk on four legs. As a member of the Bandit Clan, he is unaffiliated with any other species-related group, nor a member of any particular society save his partners in crime.

Story[]

Unlike his father, it could never be said that Sylas was a hero. Mostly, he led a simple, fulfilled life. A taciturn fisherman, resolute and easy to anger, but skilled and quick of decision, reliant enough to be considered a river dog worth following. The rivers leading from the King’s grounds to the Eastern Marshlands, were bountiful and rich, and he, like his father before him, fished and defended the waters alongside his lodge.

It was desire that undid Sylas, not for gold or riches, but for something far more precious, for the riverways of the King’s hunting grounds held a fabled fish no otter had ever tasted. This ancient, legendary fish, scales of rainbow and eyes of gold, was said to have swam only in the crystal waters of the King’s hunting grounds.

Arguing that no man or ruler should ever have the right to claim such profound beauty, and in direct defiance of the King’s laws, Sylas stalked the royal riverbanks from dusk ‘til dawn, every night, until under a golden sun, the magnificent creature revealed itself and Sylas’ harpoon struck true. As he and his closest kin dined on that virgin pink flesh that night, the aromas left his holt and pierced the village air. For a moment he was a hero.

Then, the slaughter. A night of hideous terror as the King’s Guards gathered the village up into the hall, barred the doors and set it alight. Sylas, chained outside, watched as his entire lodge, his village, his father’s legacy, his family, everything he had ever cared for, turned to ash before his eyes.

Left for dead by the King’s Guard, Sylas began to waste away. Every semblance of joy in his broken heart now tarred with suffering. Then, somewhere in the darkness between life and death, a sinister whisper reached into his grieving soul and offered him freedom... but not without a cost.

Not long after, a travelling merchant happened upon the otter. Now it is too grim a tale to tell of the rage unleashed upon that poor soul who freed such anger incarnate. Perhaps the world would be a better place had Sylas not been freed. For the simple Sylas that once lived, was no more. Blackened by a stain so dark on his soul, Death himself stood in his place.

In the horrific tales that followed him as he made his way far from the royal grounds to bide his time, to reignite his father’s talents that lie deep within him and to explore darker, forbidden ways to augment his hatred, not once did they ever mention a desire for the throne.

Just four cold, hard words… The King must die.

Gameplay[]

Hero Power[]

Sylas's unique hero ability is Butcher: In Battle, Sylas gains +1 Sword for each Bounty Level and against King's Guards these Swords Pierce.

Merely being Wanted is dangerous in the world of Armello, and with the stakes getting higher the longer one maintains their crimes, it's safe for most to keep their lawful status. However, Sylas makes it dangerous for his opponents too, becoming more and more powerful the longer his bounty remains active. By the time he's become a Traitor, he'll have +3 extra swords in battle, making it very difficult for others to claim his bounty without getting brutalized themselves. He has an excellent matchup against the King of Armello, as he certainly has a Bounty by the time he faces him. However, he should beware Spell Cards and Trickery Cards his opponents are likely to throw at him from a distance to claim his Bounty, and try to keep his Health high. Even so, savvy opponents will pack a Spirit Strike or a Sharpshooter to hit you at the worst possible time, so you'll need to be able to roll with these punches. His bonus swords will all be piercing when in combat with a King's Guard, so they are unlikely to survive fighting Sylas. This makes Prestige victories difficult for Sylas unless you equip the Serendibite ring, but his strength against the King of Armello more than makes up for this.

Sylas's hero power was not always this, however. While it still upheld the name of Butcher then, it read like this: For every King's Guard killed, Sylas gains +1 Sword in Battle, cleared upon death. This was changed after the recent update of v1.6.1 for an unstated reason.[2]
